So You Want To Tread The Boards by Jennifer Reischel
Audition coach and Singing Teachers
Audition coaches are not a 'must have' to be a successful actor or even gain a place at drama school however they can be of great use to some applicants and aspirants.
It is important to choose someone that has a lot of current practical experience of the industry and possibly drama schools (whether as a director, drama school practitioner or actor), has a vast knowledge of playwrights and plays and most importantly – doesn't 'tell you what to do'.
Coaching is more like directing than 'teaching someone the moves'. It’s about bringing out your natural aptitude and showing it off in the pressurised setting of an audition environment.
NOTE! No coach can work miracles, you either have raw talent or you don't.
In regards to singing teachers, in my opinion they are vital for most singers to build a secure technical foundation.
A good singing teacher will also work with you on song interpretation, choosing appropriate audition material and different styles of musical theatre vocal quality.
Again, no singing teacher can turn your voice into something that you were not naturally born with and you can only extend your range to a degree over time.
